MAKE for Fall: The Elemental Coat

An online quilt coat workshop with Teresa Coates. Five guided sessions, extra quilting help built in, and a group of makers working on the same coat alongside you.

You've wanted to make a quilt coat. Now you don't have to do it alone.

Maybe you've bought the pattern and it's still waiting in a drawer. Or you've admired quilted coats and wondered whether you could really make one. This workshop is for you.

The Elemental Coat is a beginner-friendly pattern, written for quilters. If you've sewn a few projects and can handle a basic quilt sandwich, you have the skills to start. I'll teach you the rest, one step at a time.

How it works

We meet online for five live sessions over six weeks. In the first session, we'll explore the possibilities and create your own quilt plan (make it or find it!). In each of the next four sessions, I teach and demonstrate the next stage of the coat. Then you sew at home, at your own pace, before we meet again.

• Every session is recorded. If you miss one, you can watch it whenever it suits you.
• You can email me between sessions. If you get stuck, send a photo and a question, and I'll reply within one to two business days.
• Extra quilting help is included. The quilted panels are where most people need a little more support, so there's an optional Panel Creation and Quilting session after the first meeting and before we start cutting. 

The schedule

Session 1: Welcome and Get Prepared · October 11 - 10am PST
Choosing fabric and batting, picking your size, and gathering supplies.

Optional: Panel Creation & Quilting · October 21 - 4pm PST 
A working session. Bring your panels and questions, and we'll troubleshoot together.

Session 2: Cutting · October 28 - 4pm PST
Laying out and cutting your pieces accurately and finishing your edges.

Session 3: Sewing the In-Seam & Patch Pockets  · November 4 - 4pm PST 
Adding the hidden in-seam pockets and preparing patch pockets.

Session 4: Putting the Coat Together · November 11 - 4pm PST 
Assembling the body and sleeves.

Session 5: Adding Hood, Collar, Cuffs, and Zippers · November 18 - 4pm PST 
Making the Hood or Collar, Cuffs and your choice of closures.

Optional: Binding the Coat  · November 22 - 10am PST 
A working session. Bring your coat, binding fabric and questions and we'll finish up.

Questions

Is this right for my skill level?
If you've completed a few sewing projects and are comfortable with the basics, yes. The pattern is beginner-friendly and I walk through every step.

What sizes does the pattern include?
XS through 2XL, but I'll help you adjust the sizing to fit you just right.

What if I miss a session?
Every session is recorded, so you can catch up whenever it suits you.

What will I need?
